TREASON

By Peter Rosenstein - July 17, 2018 12:00 am

This should no longer be a Democrat or Republican issue. The definition of Treason under law in the United States is, “Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States. (June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, § 330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.)”

It is clear what President Donald Trump did in Helsinki falls squarely under this definition of treason. If the Republicans who control congress today are so afraid of Trump they won’t act we must elect Democrats to take over the House of Representatives. With what Trump did in Helsinki they will be able to vote Articles of Impeachment no matter what Mueller comes up with.

Trump has clearly moved beyond the pale with what he is doing and saying in his effort to destroy our country; hurting our allies, helping our enemies and putting in danger world peace. At home he has set back human rights, women’s’ rights, the rights of immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community by decades. He has unleashed a raft of alt-right white supremacists and Nazis in our country and given them tacit permission to speak out in the public square. So the only question today is will all this be enough for Republicans who control Congress to show some guts and speak out in response to what this President is doing or will we see they are total lackey’s of this President and have to wait until after the next election for Congress to reclaim its rightful position as a full and equal independent branch of government. I would suggest we don’t hold our breath for Republicans to act.

Not only members of Congress but the people of the country should by now have moved beyond Party politics in dealing with this President. But we have yet to see that. In the latest polling before Helsinki 81% of Republicans still support this president. They have seen their Representatives bending over backwards to find reasons to support  him despite his policies on immigration including separating children from their parents; a tax bill giving away money to the rich and exploding the national debt; his denigration of those agencies protecting our country including the FBI and the CIA. They have watched him attack every ally while cozying up to Kim Jung-un giving away strategic military operations with our ally South Korea and receiving nothing in return but a picture with a smiling North Korean leader. This was a huge victory for Kim as it was a goal that his grandfather and father hadn’t accomplished; a meeting putting North Korea on equal footing with the world’s most powerful country.

It appears the only hope we have to stop this unhinged President is for Democrats, Independents, and Republicans who still care about our nation and world peace, to vote for Democrats running for Congress to restore the checks and balances our founding fathers built our government on. If that doesn’t happen we will have all three branches of government under the control of one unstable and maniacal President. One displaying no understanding of, or interest in, history. Contrary to his claim of being a ‘stable genius’ he is an unstable man whose actions lead us to one of two conclusions. The first being he is a blithering idiot; the second he is being blackmailed by enemies of our country in the person of Vladimir Putin; former KGB operative and currently President of the Russian Federation. While I would agree he is not educated in world affairs and isn’t interested in learning much about them, the second option is the more real one. Trump is being blackmailed by Putin and is acting as his puppet.

Considering Trump’s arrogance it is not beyond reason he didn’t believe his private meeting with Putin could be taped and only add to whatever Putin is holding over his head. Trump pretending to not understand the depth of the Russian interference in our democracy saying he believes Putin, could only be said by someone  being blackmailed and repeating what Putin asked him to say.

Trump’s campaign and his actions since assuming the Presidency make it fully believable he is under the influence of a foreign power. From his meeting with “Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at the White House in May 2017 with Tass, the official Russian news agency, releasing the pictures” to his private meeting with Putin in Helsinki and the press conference following it; this President is endangering all of us and all our allies. His actions are nothing short of Treason and he must be held to account.
